There are two very popular roofing made from profiled steel sheets. One of them is cheaper, the other is more expensive, and they both serve from 20 to 60 years (depending on the manufacturer). It seems that everyone already understands what they were talking about. Now it remains to find out what is better - metal tile or corrugated board, and for what purposes each of the coatings is more suitable.

Metal or corrugated board - which is better to use

What is a metal tile and roofing sheeting

Decking

It is called differently: professional sheet, corrugated sheet, and even profile. This material, invented in England in 1820, is made of cold-rolled roofing steel. Each sheet is given a wavy, rectangular or trapezoidal shape. To achieve strength, steel is galvanized or coated with aluzinc. A polymer coating can also be applied on top to improve the properties of the material.

Decking

This material can be divided into three types:

  • Wall corrugated board is used for the device of fences and wall cladding.
  • Roofing professional flooring (not more than a millimeter thick) is used to organize the roof.
  • Universal decking is used both for wall sheathing and for roofing. This is possible due to the well-selected shape and size of the stiffening ribs of the profile.

Metal tile

For its production, as in the previous case, cold-rolled steel is taken, which is subjected to profiling. Only its thickness is less than that of corrugated board, and the profile picture is slightly different. After all, the difference between metal tiles and corrugated board is that the former is designed to imitate natural ceramic tiles. And so it has a similar pattern. In addition, the metal tile is available with a wide variety of polymer coatings that perform a protective function.

Material Thickness and Weight

Steel used for the production of corrugated board is thicker (from 0.5 to 1.2 mm). And metal tiles are made of steel sheets from 0.4 to 0.6 mm thick. But she has several layers of coating, and if you take into account just them, then she still exceeds the profiled sheet in thickness. But the metal of the corrugated board is usually thicker, therefore the weight of the corrugated sheet is somewhat more solid - 3.6–11 kg per square meter. In metal, this figure is 3.8-7 kg. We give specific examples, taking popular brands.

  • Monterrey metal tiles have a weight of 4.5 to 5 kg per square meter and a thickness of 0.4 to 0.5 mm.
  • HC20B professional flooring weighs from 4.9 to 8.4 kg per square meter (thickness 0.45-0.8 mm).

As you can see, not one of the materials can be called particularly heavy - they do not require a reinforced rafter system. However, an increase in sheet thickness even by one tenth of a millimeter can sometimes add a few years of life to the roof.

Type of polymer coating

A layer of zinc or aluzinc is first applied to the profiled sheet (the latter gives greater strength). Aluzinc material is the brainchild of Arcelor. In it, aluminum (55 percent) and silicon (1.6 percent) were added to zinc. Such a coating is slightly less plastic than just zinc, but it is difficult to scratch it. From above, the corrugated board is covered with a passivating and priming layer, as well as an additional polymer coating.

If you cut across the sheet of metal, you can also see many layers of coatings. First, galvanized on both sides, then a passivating film of aluminum, which can additionally protect against corrosion. Then without fail there is a primer and a polymer layer, fixed with varnish.

There are many types of polymer coatings both for metal tiles and for corrugated board.

The most common are:

1. 25 microns - a layer of polyester.

The appearance of the coating is polyester.

2. 35 microns - a layer of matte polyester (Teflon is added).

Matte Polyester
The appearance of the coating is matte polyester.

3. 50 microns - a layer of pural (has a silky structure);

4. 100-200 microns - a layer of plastisol (durable and resistant to cold);

5. 300 microns - PVDF layer (the most resistant to ultraviolet).

Longevity and service life

This is influenced by several factors. First, take into account what is in sight - the polymer layer. It increases the service life of the material by 10 years. Thus, a metal tile having such a coating will last longer than a galvanized corrugated board that does not have one. If we compare professional flooring with a polymer coating and metal, then everything will depend on the type of polymer coating. The most durable (60-70 years) is considered a plastisol coating, and polyurethane is 30-40 years.

Now about the quality of galvanized steel. If the zinc on it is not more than 140 grams per square meter, then it will last 10 years less than the one with zinc - 245 grams per square meter. By the way, unlike European ones, Russian zinc producers sometimes save. Do not forget about the thickness of the steel sheet. One tenth of a millimeter added to it can increase the life of the material by 5 years. Therefore, thicker grades of corrugated board can often have a longer service life than metal tile made of thin steel.

In general, both materials are quite durable. A metal tile has an average service life of 20-40 years. The corrugated board is 30-45 years old. But when buying, be sure to consider the reliability of the manufacturer. And then after all, some Chinese products do not always sparkle with quality.

Dimensions and ease of installation

The profile of the corrugated board can be wave-wise rounded, and also have the shape of a trapezoid or rectangle.

Dimensions of corrugated sheets:

  • Sheet width - 1-1.2 m;
  • Sheet length - up to 12 m;
  • profile height - 8-45 mm;

The metal tile is made in the form of sheets with a width of 1.16 to 1.18 meters, and a length of 0.4 to 6 m. The profile height varies from 22 to 25 cm. The pattern on the metal tile sheets is more complex than that of corrugated board - it is maximally looks like a real tile laid out in rows. It should be remembered that from high temperatures the metal tile can lose its shape, so it is better not to buy its particularly long sheets.

Sizes of sheets of metal:

  • Sheet width - 1.16-1.18 m;
  • sheet length - 0.4-8 m;
  • profile height - 22-25 mm;
  • wave pitch - 350-400 mm.

Now about the installation. It is easier to produce it with corrugated board - in fact, compared to metal tile, this material is much easier to choose for a specific roof slope. In view of the simplicity of its profile, it is much easier to carry out with the help of its roofing. And vertical measurements are not needed, and trimming the details will be less difficult, and the waterproofing will be better. Note that it is much faster to cover the roof with long professional sheets. But they are very long and heavy, and one cannot cope with such a sheet. For such work, a team of experienced craftsmen is needed. And the metal tile has convenient dimensions, and put it under your strength alone.

Fire safety

None of the materials can burn completely and cannot sustain combustion, because in the middle they have metal.

Noise protection

Both of these roofing coatings require additional protection against external noise. Otherwise, the rattling of rain on the roof will get on your nerves. Good thermal insulation will help not only to keep warm, but also to muffle unwanted noise. One of the budget options for heat insulators is mineral wool.

Appearance

Metal is the first here - it looks much more interesting than a uniform professional sheet. Particularly attractive are the acute-angled roofs, in the design of which metal tile was used. A variety of types of this material allows you to design a house in any style.

Compare prices

More simple in design corrugated board is significantly cheaper than metal. For example, a roofing corrugated board with a thickness of 0.5-0.55 mm has a price per square meter from 100 to 200 rubles. A metal tile of the same thickness costs from 300 to 400 rubles per square meter. In addition, when covering a roof of complex shape, the metal tile produces an unacceptably much waste. They can be from 5 to 40 percent!

In which case it is better to use a metal tile, and in which professional flooring

1. If the slopes of your roof have a slope of less than 12-14 degrees (or it is completely flat), then take corrugated board. After all, he does not have a lower limit for this parameter, but metal tiles cannot be used under such conditions.

2. Professional sheet is also used in those cases when reliability and low price are important, and not appearance. Additional stiffening ribs due to the geometry of the profile allow you to build a very strong roof. For example, farm buildings such as a barn and a garage are quite reasonable to cover with corrugated board.

3. If design and beautiful design come to the fore, and there are no special restrictions on finances, then choose a metal tile. A house with such a roof will look very presentable.
